LENT 3.13

Lindsay Hardin

John 10:3-5 “He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. When he has

brought out all his own, he goes on ahead of them, and his sheep follow him

because they know his voice.”

Truth. That word feels good. It feels like solid ground to me. The truth I have

chosen to build my life on is God’s word. I long to open His Word and listen to His

voice daily and give myself wholly over to His truth. I long to devote my life to it.

But it’s noisy these days. There are a lot of voices we let speak into our lives.

Facebook feeds, Tik-Tok funnies and life hacks, streaming services with endless

stories and entertainment. Also, our inner voices like to speak up, reminding us of

all that we need to do and throwing in some negativity about our “daily

performance” just in case we needed a little extra. I long to sit peacefully with

God, my Bible open, ready to be focused on Him and His life-giving, powerful

words...His voice. I long to listen intently to His voice and the words He needs me

to hear when I am in the auditorium at church or sitting in class. However, it’s

noisy.

So, today, we stop longing for all of this and we take action. We focus. We listen.

We stop letting the noise and distractions take over. We silence ourselves and we

listen. Why? Because we love our God. He is a good shepherd. He is the one we

want to follow. His voice is truth. His voice is love. His voice is our hope. His voice

is eternal. We slip away with Him every day when every other force is vying for

our attention, but only God has our heart. We escape to hear His voice because

we know a secret-this earthly kingdom that everyone is feverishly building won’t

stand.

You spent time in His Word, spent time in prayer, or listened intently to His voice

today? Great! Find the blessings and mercies in that. But guess what...do it again

tomorrow and the next day. “His mercies never come to an end; they are new

every morning.” Every day we listen to His voice, to His truth. We choose not to

numb ourselves with noise. We choose to follow Him because He knows our

name and we know His voice. And one day we will see Him face to face.
