Dependence

Can you recall a time when your impatience or pride led to unnecessary conflict? I have too many instances to count. Often times we rely on ourselves to provide for our immediate wants and needs instead of leaning on the One who always sticks by our side and guides our judgement. We learn from David’s story in 1 Samuel 25-27 how patience and reliance on God lead to the formation of dependence and humility. David demonstrates restraint even when he has the ability to act against it. In chapter 25, David is angry with Nabal and aims to attack his household when Abigail reminds him that the Lord will establish his kingdom without the need to shed blood. David recognizes this wisdom and thanks God for clearing his mind and guiding his steps. Again in chapter 26, David could’ve easily killed Saul but refrains, in turn becoming blessed by him. We can relate to David in these passages through our dependence on God. When we acknowledge His authority and release matters from our own hands, an inner peace and clarity result from dependence on Him. I pray that we can set aside our pride and fully commit to knowing and trusting the Lord’s plan, because it is better than ours!
