The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit. -Psalm 34:18
As humans, we tend to make a mess of things. We sometimes make bad choices, do stupid things or just make honest mistakes. Accidents happen, people get hurt, sick or die. Despite our human efforts we sin. We sometimes act selfishly, say things we shouldn’t and hurt people we love.
Regardless of the reason that causes us to feel crushed, our Heavenly Father is well acquainted with our situation and provides a way forward.
God is never closer to us than when we are crushed or broken. Jesus knows our pain because he placed himself voluntarily in the most broken position imaginable in order to sacrifice himself for us. Jesus was innocent yet he allowed himself to be beaten, abused, spit on, insulted, mocked and ridiculed all for our benefit.
And the disciples abandoned Him by falling asleep in the midst of His agonizing prayer in the garden. Jesus had every reason to be in despair. Yet God was with Him and strengthened him in spirit. He will do the same for us if we will trust Him.
Have you ever felt really down and someone who knows you well comes and puts their arm around you? Without a single word being exchanged you feel strengthened and supported. It is a true healing moment. In the same way, God knows each of us intimately because He created us. He is right there with us in our brokenness, ready to surround us with His love and restore us in His gentle way.
We must allow Him to put his arm around us and heal our brokenness. We must turn it all over to Him. Yes, all of it, especially the brokenness. Jesus Christ will never leave us. Praise Him!
