Giving Our Attention

In Deuteronomy Chapter 14, the Israelites are given detailed instructions on tithing beginning in verse 22.  If followed, God would be pleased.  Anything less was unacceptable.  Remaining in good standing with the God of the universe is always costly because it requires our whole being .  Denying ourselves something we value and giving it to God demonstrates in a concrete way that God is placed as the highest value in our lives and in our hearts. Anything less is idolatry in God’s eyes.

Nothing valuable is ever free. There is always a cost. The purchase of the forgiveness of our sins was paid with the most valuable price of all. The sinless life of the son of God was the most precious transaction in all of history. God placed a very high value on us, his children, when he paid our sin debt with what meant the most to Him, the son he loved.

When we allow ourselves to be drawn away from God by the ubiquitous distractions of our world, we devalue Him and withhold the honor that is due Him.  But it is so hard to avoid distractions in our culture!  We are not strong enough in ourselves.  That is why we must rely on His power, grace and His Holy Spirit to help us maintain our focus. One device we can use is the practice of praying and fasting.  When we fast and pray, we are placing ourselves in the position of realizing our need. If we are hungry, it reminds us of our lack and His sustenance, if we are thirsty, it reminds us that He is our living water. He deserves our utmost attention, affection and honor. May we all learn what this means in our lives and in our hearts. Praise Him!
