Purpose

When you read about Samson’s life in Judges, it doesn’t take long to come to the conclusion that he was a very imperfect person. I think for a lot of us, it’s easy to read about people in the Bible and imagine that they are this model-of-a-human that is better than everyone else, however, when you study more about the people in the Bible, you realize how imperfect they are. For me, it’s easier to relate my life to people in the bible when I remove that idea of them being “better.”

Even though Samson seemed to go against God’s will at times, he still had a purpose to fulfill, which was to help Israel against the Philistines. Someone might argue that Samson wasn’t built for this job if he went against God’s plan and there were a lot of times when he was not being completely obedient. From this, we can take the lesson that God always has a plan, even when it seems like someone is being disobedient. This should be a comfort to us and establish more faith in God’s will because Samson’s story shows us that even when it seems like the plan is being torn apart, God has the ultimate plan and has everything under control.

I can think of several times where putting faith in God through difficult situations has brought me peace. As I reflect on these times, I can sometimes even see how God’s plan unfolded through these moments. I believe that through our faith we can get through any difficult situation including oppression and injustice, while it may be hard to think about.

As I close, I want you to think about the story of Moses, another example that comes to mind when I think of an imperfect person being used purposefully by God. When he was at the burning bush getting instructions from God, he brought up one of his weaknesses, which was public speaking. He felt confused as to why God would choose him for such an important job when he had a weakness that he felt would inhibit him from doing what God told him to. Moses was still able to lead the Israelites out of Egypt even with this weakness that he had. I want you to think about where a place in your life is that you feel weak or inadequate? Whatever that may be, God can still use you through that. He has the ultimate plan for everyone and He knows how you will be used on earth to bring Christ to others.
