I Will Be Back!

Julie M.

In the first part of John 14 you see that the disciples are naturally disturbed by the news of Jesus’ approaching departure.  Jesus tells his disciples to not be “troubled” by the news of his departure, but Thomas says to Jesus  “We have no idea where you are going” and Peter says to Jesus “Show us and we will be satisfied.”

Have you ever dropped off your child or remember being dropped off as a child, and your parents say, I will be right back to get you. A common response may be “Do you promise?”  You do your best to reassure them by saying “Yes, I promise I will be right back.” However, by the time you leave, you're a bit exhausted trying to reassure your child you will be back to get them. As parents, you don’t want your child to be sad or worried while you are away. You feel a bit anxious while you are away because of their uncertainty about your return.

That is how I feel Jesus felt when talking to a few of his disciples in the first part of John 14. Jesus tells his disciples that his time on earth is limited and he keeps reassuring them that he will still be with them even when his physical body is gone.  I can almost see him getting a little exhausted / anxious in his conversation because he keeps explaining himself, but he sees they still have a lot of uncertainty with what he is saying.

As Jesus is trying to explain where he was going and for them to not worry, I love how he states that he was going to prepare a place for them/us in Heaven.  If you think about it, Jesus has specifically prepared your forever home in Heaven, designed with you in mind. Isn’t that awesome?  If he has done that for us, we should strive to have a permanent place in our hearts for him!

Precious thoughts, Julie!! I love the analogy of us reassuring our children. It sheds a new light on His words. Thank you for sharing!

What a wonderful analogy, Julie. It's such a beautiful thought that God loves us and cares for us the way we love and care for our children - but so much more - beyond anything we can imagine. Thank you for sharing!
